About
I have a passion for beer. I love the crafty stuff, but I have a deep and abiding fondness for some "big beers" (Guinness and Miller Lite) as well, and I don't think I need give up one kind of beer for another.
However, I am ready to expand my horizons, and learn more about the art and science of crafting beer--how it's made, what makes a gueuze different from a pale ale, and that sort of thing. This blog is a journal of sorts, to share what I'm learning and the tasty stuff I've found along the way--all from a subtropical viewpoint.
I think my location is important enough to mention for a couple of reasons. One, it's hot as hell down here much of the time, and I think that affects the beer choices Floridians make. Two, as far as I can tell, Florida seems to be behind the rest of the U.S. in our appreciation of craft beer, and I suspect that I'm being cheated out of some good stuff.
Oh, and the name? I've been using the phrase "scurrilous tosh" for blogs and online communities for more than ten years. I couldn't even tell you where I picked it up, but it's basically a nicer phrase for bullshit. Scurrilous means "using or given to coarse language" and tosh means "nonsense." While I've tried to keep my language clean on the blog, I do swear like a sailor in the real world. And let's face it, a blog dedicated to beer is considered a bit silly by more than a few. Eh, screw 'em. But it's a fun phrase.
If you have questions, suggestions for beers I should try or books I should read, or anything else of a beery manner, you may send me an e-mail: jen@scurriloustosh.com.
